Telstra not working? Try this

Telstra provides fibre internet, wireless home internet and mobile service. The Telstra Smart Modem switches to 4G backup by itself when the nbn line drops, so slow speeds can be a sign the fixed line is down.

Find out whether Telstra knows about an outage at your address

  1. Open Telstra's official outage page (linked below) and enter your address or sign in.
  2. Look at the report chart on this page. A sudden jump in the last hour means other Telstra customers are affected too.
  3. Ask a neighbour on Telstra, or check a second device, to see whether the problem is only yours.

Restart your Telstra Smart Modem the right way

  1. Unplug the power from your Telstra Smart Modem. Leave the fibre box on the wall (ONT) plugged in unless its lights are off or red.
  2. Wait a full 60 seconds so the equipment drops its old connection.
  3. Plug it back in and give it up to 10 minutes. The internet light should turn solid white, green or blue depending on the model.
  4. Still nothing? A red or dark light on the fibre box means the line itself is down, and only the provider can fix that.
  5. Open the My Telstra app and run its connection test. It can reset the line from the provider's side, which a power cycle cannot.

Fix Telstra wireless home internet

  1. Restart the Telstra Smart Modem: unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
  2. Move the gateway near a window on the side of the house facing the nearest tower. One room over can double the signal.
  3. Speeds drop in the evening when the tower is busy. If it is slow only at peak time, that is congestion, not an outage.

No signal or no data on Telstra

  1. Switch airplane mode on for 10 seconds and off again. This forces the phone to register with the network from scratch.
  2. Restart the phone. If it shows "SOS" or "Emergency calls only", the SIM is not being accepted by the network.
  3. Calls work but data does not? Open Settings, turn mobile data off and on, and check the APN matches the one in Telstra's help pages.
  4. Try Wi-Fi calling if you have home internet. It keeps calls and texts working during a mast fault.
  5. Take the SIM out, wipe it and reseat it, or toggle the eSIM off and on in Settings.

Work out whether it is the internet or just your Wi-Fi

  1. Connect a laptop to the router with a network cable. If the cable works and Wi-Fi does not, the provider is fine and the router or its position is the problem.
  2. Test more than one device. One failing device points to that device.
  3. Turn off any VPN and try again.

Telstra outage questions

Is Telstra down right now?

The status at the top of this page is updated every few minutes from automated checks of Telstra's systems and from visitor reports. Our checks reach Telstra's website and sign-in servers, so a local line or mast fault in one neighbourhood shows up first in the report chart rather than in the checks.

How do I check for a Telstra outage in my area?

Use Telstra's official outage page, which shows faults for your own address or postcode. Then compare with the reports on this page to see whether other customers are affected.

Why is my Telstra internet slow but not down?

Slow speeds with a working connection usually come from Wi-Fi, not the line. Test with a cable first. If the wired speed is also far below your plan, there may be a fault on the line that has not become a full outage yet, so report it.

Am I owed compensation for a Telstra outage?

Under Australian Consumer Law you can ask for a refund or credit for a service you paid for and did not receive. Raise it with Telstra first. If it is not resolved, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) takes complaints for free.

How long do Telstra outages usually last?

Most faults are cleared within a few hours. Damage to cables from storms or construction can take a day or more, because a crew has to repair the line by hand.
