nbn not working? Try this
nbn provides fibre internet, wireless home internet and satellite internet. nbn is the wholesale network. You cannot call nbn about a fault: report it to your internet provider, who logs it with nbn.
Find out whether nbn knows about an outage at your address
- Open nbn's official outage page (linked below) and enter your address or sign in.
- Look at the report chart on this page. A sudden jump in the last hour means other nbn customers are affected too.
- Ask a neighbour on nbn, or check a second device, to see whether the problem is only yours.
Restart your nbn connection box the right way
- Unplug the power from your nbn connection box. Leave the fibre box on the wall (ONT) plugged in unless its lights are off or red.
- Wait a full 60 seconds so the equipment drops its old connection.
- Plug it back in and give it up to 10 minutes. The internet light should turn solid white, green or blue depending on the model.
- Still nothing? A red or dark light on the fibre box means the line itself is down, and only the provider can fix that.
- Open the nbn website and run its connection test. It can reset the line from the provider's side, which a power cycle cannot.
Check your nbn connection box
- Open the nbn website and look at the outage or obstruction screen. It tells you whether drops come from the network or from something blocking the dish.
- Heavy rain, wet snow or ice on the dish weakens the signal. Service usually returns when the weather passes.
- Unplug the dish and router from power for 60 seconds, plug them back in and allow up to 15 minutes to reconnect to the satellites.
- Make sure nothing new is in the way, such as tree growth or a moved dish.
Fix nbn wireless home internet
- Restart the nbn connection box: unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Move the gateway near a window on the side of the house facing the nearest tower. One room over can double the signal.
- Speeds drop in the evening when the tower is busy. If it is slow only at peak time, that is congestion, not an outage.
Work out whether it is the internet or just your Wi-Fi
- Connect a laptop to the router with a network cable. If the cable works and Wi-Fi does not, the provider is fine and the router or its position is the problem.
- Test more than one device. One failing device points to that device.
- Turn off any VPN and try again.

nbn outage questions
Is nbn down right now?
The status at the top of this page is updated every few minutes from automated checks of nbn's systems and from visitor reports. Our checks reach nbn's website and sign-in servers, so a local line or mast fault in one neighbourhood shows up first in the report chart rather than in the checks.
How do I check for a nbn outage in my area?
Use nbn's official outage page, which shows faults for your own address or postcode. Then compare with the reports on this page to see whether other customers are affected.
Why is my nbn internet slow but not down?
Slow speeds with a working connection usually come from Wi-Fi, not the line. Test with a cable first. If the wired speed is also far below your plan, there may be a fault on the line that has not become a full outage yet, so report it.
Am I owed compensation for a nbn outage?
Under Australian Consumer Law you can ask for a refund or credit for a service you paid for and did not receive. Raise it with nbn first. If it is not resolved, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) takes complaints for free.
How long do nbn outages usually last?
Weather drops last minutes. Network-wide faults are usually cleared within a few hours.
