Optus not working? Try this
Optus provides fibre internet, wireless home internet and mobile service. Optus had nationwide outages in November 2023 and September 2025 that also affected calls to triple zero. In an emergency during an outage, try another network's phone or a landline.
Find out whether Optus knows about an outage at your address
- Open Optus's official outage page (linked below) and enter your address or sign in.
- Look at the report chart on this page. A sudden jump in the last hour means other Optus customers are affected too.
- Ask a neighbour on Optus, or check a second device, to see whether the problem is only yours.
Restart your Optus Ultra WiFi modem the right way
- Unplug the power from your Optus Ultra WiFi modem. Leave the fibre box on the wall (ONT) plugged in unless its lights are off or red.
- Wait a full 60 seconds so the equipment drops its old connection.
- Plug it back in and give it up to 10 minutes. The internet light should turn solid white, green or blue depending on the model.
- Still nothing? A red or dark light on the fibre box means the line itself is down, and only the provider can fix that.
- Open the My Optus app and run its connection test. It can reset the line from the provider's side, which a power cycle cannot.
Fix Optus wireless home internet
- Restart the Optus Ultra WiFi modem: unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Move the gateway near a window on the side of the house facing the nearest tower. One room over can double the signal.
- Speeds drop in the evening when the tower is busy. If it is slow only at peak time, that is congestion, not an outage.
No signal or no data on Optus
- Switch airplane mode on for 10 seconds and off again. This forces the phone to register with the network from scratch.
- Restart the phone. If it shows "SOS" or "Emergency calls only", the SIM is not being accepted by the network.
- Calls work but data does not? Open Settings, turn mobile data off and on, and check the APN matches the one in Optus's help pages.
- Try Wi-Fi calling if you have home internet. It keeps calls and texts working during a mast fault.
- Take the SIM out, wipe it and reseat it, or toggle the eSIM off and on in Settings.
Work out whether it is the internet or just your Wi-Fi
- Connect a laptop to the router with a network cable. If the cable works and Wi-Fi does not, the provider is fine and the router or its position is the problem.
- Test more than one device. One failing device points to that device.
- Turn off any VPN and try again.

Optus outage questions
Is Optus down right now?
The status at the top of this page is updated every few minutes from automated checks of Optus's systems and from visitor reports. Our checks reach Optus's website and sign-in servers, so a local line or mast fault in one neighbourhood shows up first in the report chart rather than in the checks.
How do I check for a Optus outage in my area?
Use Optus's official outage page, which shows faults for your own address or postcode. Then compare with the reports on this page to see whether other customers are affected.
Why is my Optus internet slow but not down?
Slow speeds with a working connection usually come from Wi-Fi, not the line. Test with a cable first. If the wired speed is also far below your plan, there may be a fault on the line that has not become a full outage yet, so report it.
Am I owed compensation for a Optus outage?
Under Australian Consumer Law you can ask for a refund or credit for a service you paid for and did not receive. Raise it with Optus first. If it is not resolved, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) takes complaints for free.
How long do Optus outages usually last?
Most faults are cleared within a few hours. Damage to cables from storms or construction can take a day or more, because a crew has to repair the line by hand.
