EarthLink not working? Try this
EarthLink provides fibre internet, DSL and wireless home internet. EarthLink sells service over other companies' lines, so an outage often starts with the network that reaches your address.
Find out whether EarthLink knows about an outage at your address
- Sign in to the EarthLink app on mobile data. Known outages for your address are shown on the first screen.
- Look at the report chart on this page. A sudden jump in the last hour means other EarthLink customers are affected too.
- Ask a neighbour on EarthLink, or check a second device, to see whether the problem is only yours.
Restart your EarthLink modem and router the right way
- Unplug the power from your modem and router. Leave the fibre box on the wall (ONT) plugged in unless its lights are off or red.
- Wait a full 60 seconds so the equipment drops its old connection.
- Plug it back in and give it up to 10 minutes. On DSL, wait for the "DSL" or "broadband" light to stay solid.
- Still no sync? Plug the modem straight into the main phone socket without extension leads or splitters.
- Open the EarthLink app and run its connection test. It can reset the line from the provider's side, which a power cycle cannot.
Fix EarthLink wireless home internet
- Restart the gateway: unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Move the gateway near a window on the side of the house facing the nearest tower. One room over can double the signal.
- Speeds drop in the evening when the tower is busy. If it is slow only at peak time, that is congestion, not an outage.
Work out whether it is the internet or just your Wi-Fi
- Connect a laptop to the router with a network cable. If the cable works and Wi-Fi does not, the provider is fine and the router or its position is the problem.
- Test more than one device. One failing device points to that device.
- Turn off any VPN and try again.

EarthLink outage questions
Is EarthLink down right now?
The status at the top of this page is updated every few minutes from automated checks of EarthLink's systems and from visitor reports. Our checks reach EarthLink's website and sign-in servers, so a local line or mast fault in one neighbourhood shows up first in the report chart rather than in the checks.
How do I check for a EarthLink outage in my area?
Use the EarthLink app, which shows faults for your own address or postcode. Then compare with the reports on this page to see whether other customers are affected.
Why is my EarthLink internet slow but not down?
Slow speeds with a working connection usually come from Wi-Fi, not the line. Test with a cable first. If the wired speed is also far below your plan, there may be a fault on the line that has not become a full outage yet, so report it.
Can I get a refund for a EarthLink outage?
There is no federal rule that forces US providers to credit outages, but most will if you ask. Contact EarthLink after service returns, give the start and end time, and ask for a prorated credit for the days you were without service.
How long do EarthLink outages usually last?
Most faults are cleared within a few hours. Damage to cables from storms or construction can take a day or more, because a crew has to repair the line by hand.
